is the major point of entry for visitors travelling across
Bass Strait.
The city of Devonport is the largest
and most important port on Australia's north coast.
It is located at the mouth of the Mersey
River, 98 km west of Launceston on the Bass Highway. The
port's importance, particularly as far as visitors from
the mainland are concerned, is that it is the arrival
port for the Spirit of Australia I, II and III, the car
ferries, which arrive from Melbourne and Sydney.
The Melbourne service operates daily
and the Sydney service sails three times a week. Consequently
it has become known as 'The Gateway to Australia'.

the mainland is that Devonport, of all the towns in Australia,
outside Launceston and Hobart, offers an excellent range

Devonport has a number of attractions
close to the City Centre including aboriginal rock engravings,
a maritime museum and a 7 km cycle/walking track which
extends around the picturesque foreshore from the City
past the Swimming Pool to the Don River Railway.
For visitors
intending to spend some time in the Cradle Mountain National
Park, it is located just 1.5 hours’ drive south
of the City. Devonport is an important stop-off point
to obtain information and purchase provisions for their
trip to Cradle.
A bus service
operates from the Devonport Visitor Centre and Cradle
Mountain day tours and guided day and overnight bushwalking
tours also depart from Devonport on a regular basis.
